Professor Hourigan was the first to perform Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) for achalasia in Brisbane, Queensland in 2015 and is the most experienced in Queensland. He was also a co-author for the first publication reporting the outcomes of POEM in Australia. He has mentored several colleagues throughout Australia in POEM. He also has significant expertise in all other minimally invasive treatments for achalasia, so that he can advise the best treatment option for achalasia.

Prof. Luke Hourigan practises privately at Greenslopes Private Hospital as an associate of Queensland Gastroenterology. He is also the Clinical Director of Endoscopy at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. He has the academic title of Associate Professor of Medicine (University of Queensland).

He completed advanced training in Gastroenterology at the Mater Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. He completed postgraduate training in Interventional Endoscopy at Westmead Hospital, Sydney and St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto.

Professor Hourigan is a highly experienced interventional endoscopist. He supervises gastrointestinal endoscopic training and is involved in endoscopic research.

He has been an invited speaker and proceduralist at national and international meetings. He has been an active member of GESA (Gastroenterological Society of Australia) including several terms as a committee member of AGEA (Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association), now known as the Endoscopy Faculty Executive Committee.

He is a past president of the Gastroenterological Society of Queensland. He was part of the Cancer Council Australia working party, which developed clinical guidelines for the management of Barrett’s oesophagus.

Professor Hourigan has significant experience in interventional upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. This includes the management of Barrett’s dysplasia, early gastrointestinal cancer and large colonic polypectomy. He has expertise in ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound and the complex endoscopic management of pancreatico-biliary disorders.

He was the pioneer of Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in Brisbane in 2015 for the treatment of achalasia and is one of the most experienced performing Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in Australia. He has expertise in all minimally invasive treatments for achalasia.
